It’s a points based game with the objective being to be the first to a certain number of points.  In most badminton games, the goal is to reach 21 points. However, if the score reaches 20-20, the game continues until one team leads by two points, known as a “two point lead.”

Points are scored when the shuttlecock lands in the opponent’s court and they are unable to return it, or if the shuttlecock hits the ground within the opponent’s court. If the shuttlecock lands on the line of the court, it is considered in. If the shuttlecock hits the ceiling or any other object, it is considered out and the point goes to the opposing team.

The serving order also alternates every five points, with the player on the right side serving first, followed by the player on the left side. If a player commits a fault, such as serving the shuttlecock too high or touching the net, the point goes to the opposing team.

In addition to points, badminton games may also be won by a “golden point,” which is a point that is played until one team scores. This rule is typically used in professional tournaments and high-level matches to ensure a winner.

What Equipment Do You Need?

To play badminton, players need a badminton racquet, a shuttlecock and a pair of badminton shoes (or suitable trainers).

The racquet is made of lightweight materials, such as carbon fibre or aluminium and has a small head with a stringed surface. The shuttlecock is made of feathers or synthetic materials and weighs much less than a tennis ball. It is important to use a shuttlecock that is appropriate for the skill level of the players. B

  • The shuttlecock must be hit within a certain time frame after it has been served. If a player hits the shuttlecock too late, the point goes to the opposing team

 

  • Additionally, players are not allowed to touch the net or the net posts during the game, as this is considered a fault. If a player touches the net or the posts, the point goes to the opposing team.

 

  • The “let” rule allows players to stop play and replay the point if the shuttlecock is caught in the net or if a player is disrupted during play, such as if the shuttlecock hits a player’s body or clothing. The “let” rule is called by the player who was disrupted or by the umpire, and the point is replayed with no penalty to either team.
