If you’re a total sports betting novice, there’s a good chance you’ve been baffled by odds on more than one occasion.

Sometimes, a cheeky (but affordable!!) little bet on a sporting event can make it even more interesting. But your first hurdle is to figure out what those bloomin’ fractions mean. This is our plain English guide to odds in sporting betting.

Grasping Betting Odds

At the core of sports betting lies the concept of odds. Odds essentially represent the likelihood or probability of an outcome occurring in a sporting event. They are what dictates how much you stand to win if you place a bet that wins. There are three types of odds that you’ll come across;

Decimal Odds: Widely used in Europe, Canada and Australia, decimal odds indicate the amount you will win for every $1 wagered.

For instance if the odds are 3.00 and you place a $10 bet you will receive $30 in total if you win ($20 profit plus your original $10 bet).

American Odds:  In the United States these odds are frequent. Are presented as negative numbers. Positive numbers (e.g., +500) reveal how much you would win from a $100 bet while negative numbers (e.g., 200) indicate the amount you need to bet to win $100.

Fractional Odds: These odds are commonly used in the UK so we’ll talk more about them specifically.

You might see something presented as 3/1 odds. What that means is that for every £1 you bet, you can win £3 plus your stake back, for a total of £4.

Now, sometimes you might see odds where the first number is the bigger number. For example 1/4. This would also be referred to as “four to one on.” Any odds where the first number is the smallest are what we call “odds on.”

These are events where something is highly likely. For example, let’s say that Manchester United were playing a much much much lower league side such as Stalybridge Celtic. It would be much likelier for Manchester United to win than Stalybridge so they’d almost certainly be odds on and it might be extremely odds on like 1/18. What that means is that for every £18 you bet, you’d win £1 plus your stake back.

In other words if you bet £18 and it happened, you’d get £19 back in total (£1 “profit’). So you don’t stand to gain much but statistically the risk is much lower.

And that, in essence, is how odds work.

Understanding these odds is vital as they not only inform you about returns on your bets but also provide insights into how bookmakers perceive expected outcomes.
