We are at the point in the gaming world where eSports are some of the biggest and best parts of it. The effect that eSports has had on the gaming industry is massive and has brought a whole host of new fans and a large amount of money too. There was one game that was a leader in making competitive gaming big and that was CSGO.
Now, we are not saying that gaming wasn’t competitive before CSGO became as popular as it is, but, CSGO definitely did add a whole new level of competition and made the average player feel as if they were playing in pro-level matches.
Unlike other games, like EAFC or Call Of Duty, where you can focus on and off and not have that many negatives if you lose focus on CSGO, your game will be over and your team will lose. With all this in mind and the effects that CS GO has had on the eSports world, we are starting to wonder whether playing CS GO competitively is a sport.
Why It Could Be Looked At As A Sport
When we think about sports and what makes a sport, we think about the training, the competitiveness, the level of skill and competition among other things. Now, when we look at CSGO, do you see anything separating the two? The only real difference is the physical aspect of sports but even then, playing CSGO requires a high level of skill and impressive hand eye coordination mixed with great reflexes and other things. These are the key components of a sport.
Similar to sports, playing CSGO competitively is something that you are born with and a skill that you can nurture and get better at over time. The viewership of sports is also another major point people bring up but in some countries, CSGO and other eSports attract more viewers than regular sports. As well as that we now have CSGO gambling sites that allow you to place bets on the game which is something every sport also has.
Why People Disagree
When I hear both sides of this argument I find myself agreeing with both. I can’t sit here and say that CS GO requires no skill and isn’t a sport, if we consider chess and bowling or even darts, as sports, then CSGO has got to fit that bill.
However, these are at least active sports, you have to use your hands and legs to play bowling and darts and CSGO isn’t like that. You can’t just sit around and play darts all day, you have to do some form of physical activity, and while you could look at CSGO as physical because you use your hands, eyes, fingers and even ears to make decisions, it doesn’t have the same effect that other sports have.
Do We Think It Is A Sport?
As I said before, I can see both sides of the argument, I can understand why both sides could have their own opinions and I think the debate itself is a fun one. If I needed to pick whether it was a sport or not, I would say that I think it is.
I think that the hand eye coordination and the strain your hands and fingers go through is similar to a darts player and there is no debate whether dart is a sport or not. The fact that it isn’t a form of exercise is a negative but that doesn’t take away from the sports aspects it has.
I think that with the viewerships and the CS GO tournaments, it is growing massively and slowly more people will see it as a sport. The ability to bet on it, like you can a sport, is another thing working in its favour.
