Grey Mare’s Tail in Kinlochleven is a stunning little waterfall walk. Not to be mistaken with Grey Mare’s Tail in Moffat, this is a gorgeous little route taking in a beautiful woodland valley.
Here’s the mini route I took and how that went.
Hike date | 16th November 2024 |
Weather conditions | Drizzly and rainy, quite cold |
Distance hiked | 1.5km |
Walking time | 40 minutes including photo stops |
Elevation gain total | 74m |
Terrain | Easy to follow path, slippy in parts. Option to get closer to waterfall balancing on beams |
Solo hike? | Yes |
Less of a hike and more of a little wander, this is a waterfall I really wanted to go and check out when I was visiting Glencoe for a weekend. And I am so glad I did.
If you weren’t stopping to take photos and mess about (like I did) you could easily get to the waterfall and back in well under half an hour from the small community car park in Kinlochleven.
Grey Mare’s Tail Kinlochleven Walking Route
Here’s the route I took:
AllTrails estimates this as just under a kilometre. In reality, for me, with all my wandering around in the woods after, I walked 1.4km in total but this was a really short walk and a very quick and rewarding waterfall stop.

I spent four days on a solo hiking trip to Glencoe last weekend. as well as the bigger hikes and walks I did, I took the opportunity to do some shorter walks in particular out to waterfalls that I’ve previously not had chance to go and check out. Grey Mare’s Tail in Kinlochleven, not to be mistaken with Grey Mare’s Tail in Moffat which is also spectacular, is a short little waterfall walk with big views. You start from a car park in Kinlochleven (£4 to park all day). And then it’s a case of following very straightforward, simple footpaths down into Woodland Valley area, across the stream and over to the waterfall itself. it will take you no more than 10 to 15 minutes to reach the waterfall at the very most and that is even taking Care in wet weather. This is a gorgeous little walk 🥰
I really did enjoy this route, particularly balancing along the boards to get a closer view.
That part can be a tad precarious and it was a particularly wet day when I visited. So take care. It’s slippy under foot.
Using the boards and the hand holds in the rock face, you can get quite close. But bear in mind that you cannot cross the water to the other side, as the other side is private use for the via Ferrata only.
It this is a waterfall walk that offers really big views for relatively little effort. Look at this beauty:
Would I Walk it Again?
Absolutely. This is a tiny little walk with big, rewarding views. In fact, if we look at the effort to rewards ratio, this is one of the best waterfall walks there is! It’s so quick and easy to access that even if you’re visiting Kinlochleven with people less keen on walking or hiking than you, you can still take them out to enjoy this one.
I would definitely go back.
