Glencoe Lochan was something of an unplanned little wander for me. And I'm so glad I went. The spectacular scenery and incredible effort to rewards ratio had be wandering why I'd never been before. So let me share it with you.

Sometimes you stumble upon a walk you had no intention of doing and it turns out to be one you’d do again and again. Glencoe Lochan was that for me. I visited Glencoe in Autumn 2024 and some pretty horrific weather had put paid to some mountain plans. So I spent a lot of my time there walking low level routes. So I made the call between a couple of my planned stops to just have a little stop at Glencoe Lochan during a break in the weather.

I am so glad I did. This is a pram friendly and very much family friendly walking trail with some absolutely incredible views, so let me share the information with you.

Glencoe Lochan Parking

There’s a reasonable sized car park at Glencoe Lochan. I visited on an Autumn weekend which, for the most part, had been riddled with diabolical weather and when I arrived there was only one other car in the car park. But I imagine it could get busy. Fees when I visited were £3 for a day in a standard car.

You’ll find it at Glencoe Lochan, Ballachulish PH49 4HT and it’s reasonably well signposted.

Available Paths

There are a few trails available. I took one that just went around the Lochan and it was a quick and easy walk. Options include though:

There’s:

  • The Glencoe Lochan Trail (the one I did) which is an easy grade 1.6km walk
  • The Woodland Trails which is a strenuous graded 1.6km walk
  • The Mountain trail which takes in some of the slopes of Stac a’Chlamhain and is again 1.6km

I took the Glencoe Lochan Trail as I wanted somethig quick and easy in between two other walks I was doing that day. I did not regret my choice.

The Views from Glencoe Lochan

Glencoe Lochan’s biggest flex is those mountain views.

You can see the Pap of Glencoe:

And you can see many of the other mountains in the Glencoe are as well, which were snow capped at the time I visited:

The views around this path were absolutely unreal and it was such a simple walk.

The Paths are Pram Friendly and Family Friendly

The footpath was very easy to follow and you could’ve gotten a pram around it when I visited.

Glencoe Lochan Boardwalk

It was a solo trip for me but I couldn’t help but think the entire time that I was there how much my sons would enjoy this. Definitely a solid family friendly option.

There are lots of different birds and small mammals to spot here too.

How Long Does the Glencoe Lochan Trail Take?

The website advises you to allow half hour for the trail. If you’re walking solo without children and you walk a lot, you probably won’t need that long. But allow longer with little legs… and also if you, like me, stop to take photos every 37 seconds.

Would I do this one again?

Absolutely. I had no specific plans to come here bit I honestly think this is an incredibly underrated walk in Glencoe. I’d definitely love to revisit in winter.
