Kinnoull Hill, Tower and Woodland – A Gorgeous Little Hike with MASSIVE Views

Kinnoull Tower Drone Photo (1)
Kinnoull Tower is perched on a cliff edge overlooking the River Tay and just by the side of the A90. I'd always fancied a wander up there, each time I've driven past. So finally, I went and did it. Here's some photos and a little review of a small hike with BIG views.

I’d often noticed Kinnoull Tower while driving up the A90 on my way to see friends or go hiking (or both).

Each time I drove past the gorgeous tower perched on the end of a cliff, I’d tell myself that one day I’d walk up and check it out properly. So I did that in late March 2023. Here’s that gorgeous little hike went with data from my Apple Watch.

This was such a gorgeous little walk.

Kinnoull Woodland and Tower Hiking Route

I followed this route:

There’s a tiny little parking area just a few minutes off the A90 and, just at the start of the walk, a little picnic bench.

From here it’s a really straightforward route through the woodlands (wish I’d taken some photos). There are lots of footpaths so you can certainly get to the tower in different ways than the way I did. Across the area though, the paths are really well maintained and accessible for children too, in my opinion.

Before too long you reach a sort of cliff edge path and you get your first look at the tower.

It’s such a great view from here, looking North as the River Tay winds its way towards the North Sea.

Approaching Kinnoull Tower

Minutes later I was at the tower. There are benches here if you want to sit and take in the view.

It’s an impressive structure affording some pretty remarkable views:

At this point, I had been walking only around 30 minutes. The effort to views ratio is pretty remarkable really.

It was an easy walk from here around the cliff edge a little further and then back into the woods and back to the car park.

I was honestly utterly delighted I had stopped to do this one and finally get to check out Kinnoull Tower.

Kinnoull Tower is such a gorgeous little viewing spot. You can hike up from Perth city centre or park in a small car park at the edge of the woods and enjoy a wooand walk up the hill. Whichever way you do it, the views are stunning!

Is Kinnoull Tower a Dog Friendly Walk?

I saw plenty of people walking their dogs on the day. What I would say is that up near the tower there are some drops off the cliff edges – so take a view as to whether your own furry friend should be on lead at that point.

Is Kinnoull Tower a Child Friendly Walk?

In my views, yes. But take into account the ages of your children and just keep an eye out around those cliff edges again.

Would I Do it Again?

Yes, definitely. It’s a lovely little walk and perfect if you’ve only got an hour or two free!

Best Portable Charging Banks for Hiking in 2025

Traditionalists may not like it! But personally, I don’t like to risk being stuck on a hill or mountain with a dead phone or head torch battery. So I like to carry a portable charging device (or 2, or 3) with me. Here are the best portable charging banks for hiking that I’ve used. (And I’ve used a lot, by the way).
