Dubai is known for its beaches, year round sunshine, record breaking skyscrapers and high end tourism. In fact, Dubai attracts millions of tourists every single year.

But one thing we perhaps don’t typically associate with Dubai is sport. The destination does, however, host some incredible sporting events and here are 5 you should consider getting out to.

1. The Dubai Rugby 7s

Amongst the biggest events in the Middle East sporting calendar is the Dubai Rugby 7s, taking place next in December 2023.

A “festival of sport,” there’s so much going on beyond the game itself. Last year saw over 5,000 athletes from 32 countries compete in front of thousands of spectators.

2. DP World Tour Championship Golf

A renowned golfing event attracting over 65,000 attendees, the DP World Tour Championship will next be held in November 2023.

One not to be missed for the golfing fanatics.

3. The Dubai World Cup – Horse Racing

Horse racing is one of the more controversial sporting events in the calendar. Nonetheless, the Dubai World Cup, held on the last Saturday of March at the Meydan race course, attracts full crowds at the 80,000 capacity venue.

4. The Dubai Desert Classic

Another golfing event here, but indeed the sport does attract many a tourist to Dubai. The Dubai Desert Classic attracts over 38,000 spectators each January, all watching elite golfers compete for a $12 million prize fund.

5. The Dubai Marathon

The Dubai Marathon is a sporting event anyone can apply to take part in! It attracts around 30,000 runners across 3 races and takes place in January each year. It also sees thousands of spectators lining the streets.

Thinking about having a go? Just bear in mind you should be happy running in warm weather. Even in January in Dubai, temperatures can reach 24 degrees.

Dubai and Sport

So it might not be a destination you’d instantly think of for sporting events, but amongst its millions of tourists are sporting spectators travelling just for that purpose.

And with more money in sport heading the Middle East, we’d expect to see bigger attendances, prize pools and events in the years to come.

How to Train for a Big Mountain Hiking Adventure

Training for mountain hikes… how do you go about it? I’ve just completed Toubkal and am currently training for the Welsh 3000s. I’m a regular hiker and scrambler so have a degree of “hill fitness” already, but am under no illusion that the Welsh 3000s will be a ludicrous day and phenomenal test of fitness over 24 hours. I’m in the fortunate position to have a personal trainer who has helped me plan my training and continues to help me improve my fitness for the mountains. So with a bit of help from him, here’s our guide to training for a big mountain hike.
